Breaking Through Hard Ground with ICP Piles at a Cyberjaya Data Centre

Data centre is one of the project developments that require reliable and robust foundation systems capable of supporting substantial structural loads while ensuring long-term performance. As these facilities house high-value, mission-critical equipment and operate continuously, foundation design and construction must carefully consider site-specific ground conditions and installation requirements.

For one of our data centre projects in Cyberjaya, hard ground conditions presented challenges during pile installation. At the same time, restrictions on vibration and noise required the adoption of a hydraulic injection driving method. Extra cautions are required to install the pile in the hard ground condition.

Balancing Installation Force and Pile Integrity

In hard ground conditions, the pile encounters high resistance from both shaft and toe during the jack-in process. High injection forces are required to install the pile until it achieved the required termination criteria.

The high injection forces require equivalent or slightly greater force on the clamping system, to maintain a secure grip on the pile without introducing excessive localised stresses that could affect the structural integrity of the pile. Achieving the appropriate balance between injection force and clamping force able to maintain pile verticality and integrity throughout the installation process.

Given the high resistance encountered in the hard ground condition, all available clamps were used to distribute the clamping stresses more evenly and prevent excessive compressive stress/eccentric loading from being concentrated at individual clamping points.

This application not only managed to install the pile to the required set, but also successfully maintained the pile integrity throughout the installation process.

Engineered to Withstand Installation on Hard Ground Conditions

Given the hard ground conditions the pile may experience higher soil resistance during the installation. Hence selecting a pile with higher concrete strength  is needed to withstand the installation stresses was an important consideration.

For this project, ICP Piles were selected due its high concrete strength to withstand the stresses encountered during penetration into the hard ground conditions

In addition, the inherent geometry of the spun pile provided a further advantage. Its uniform circular cross-section helped distribute clamping forces uniformly around the pile circumference, reducing localised stress concentrations.

With that, all the pile points were successfully installed to set while maintaining pile integrity.

ICP Piles: Reliable Foundation Performance for Data Centres

This project demonstrates that pile selection and specification involve more than achieving the required design or working load. For critical infrastructure such as data centres, factors including ground conditions, drivability, pile strength, installation methodology and pile integrity must all be considered as part of the overall foundation solution.

With a proven track record across various data centre developments in Malaysia, ICP Piles continues to provide reliable spun pile solutions designed to meet demanding project requirements—from pile design and specification through to successful installation.
