The Dual Challenge of Soil and Supply
Constructing the Miri CCPP on the Miri coastline presented significant engineering hurdles. The site required a deep foundation system with penetration reaching depths 38 to 48 meters to navigate soft soil conditions.
For fast-track projects in East Malaysia, ensuring a consistent and reliable supply of piles is crucial to meeting demanding construction schedules. In addition to logistical challenges that can occasionally disrupt project progress, pile availability—particularly for diameters above 250mm—remains a significant concern in the region. The strategy involved supplying 2,715 points of Grade 80 (Class B) Spun Piles in 350mm and 500mm diameters. With well-planned supply chain management, the project managed to complete within the stipulated timeline.

By using 500mm piles to cater working loads of up to 185 tons, ICP Piles secured the heavy turbines on an economically optimized foundation that outperformed traditional alternatives in soft ground conditions. Furthermore, the centrifugal spinning process produces a highly compacted and durable concrete with low permeability, enhancing resistance to groundwater ingress and ensuring long-term performance in Miri’s high-water-table environment.
