Foundation Solution for One of Malaysia’s Key Infrastructure Corridors – West Coast Expressway (WCE)

The West Coast Expressway (WCE) is more than just a highway—it serves as a key national link along Peninsular Malaysia’s west coast, improving connectivity, supporting the movement of people and goods, and helping to open up inland areas for industrial, commercial, and regional growth. For infrastructure of this scale, long-term performance starts below ground, where the foundation system must be designed to perform reliably under challenging soil conditions.

Supporting Highway Development on Soft Ground

ICP Piles supported piling works for several sections of the West Coast Expressway. At WCE Section 7B, soft ground conditions required a deep foundation system capable of carrying high loads while ensuring stability for embankments and highway structures. The section involved approximately 25,000 pile points using 300 mm diameter spun piles, totaling about 140,000 tons, with penetration depths reaching up to 48 m and working loads of up to 60 tons.

Challenges with Alternative Solutions

The site is underlain by soft soil, where long-term settlement control and stability are key design considerations. A deep piled foundation system was therefore selected to transfer loads more reliably, minimize settlement risk, and ensure long-term highway performance. ICP Piles was adopted due to its consistent factory-controlled quality, rapid installation, and reliable structural performance under demanding ground conditions. The selection was made through a value engineering process considering ground conditions, load requirements, settlement tolerance, and construction efficiency. Ground improvement methods such as stone columns were considered less suitable, as the site requires stricter settlement control, deeper load transfer, and higher reliability,

ICP Piles Offers a Better Solution

The key engineering value  for this project is not only initial cost, but performance certainty, settlement control, durability, and reduced maintenance risk over the highway’s service life. In this context, ICP Piles was selected as the optimal foundation system for the project, representing a more cost-effective solution for the project’s technical requirements. Installation was executed using 20 piling rigs, with each rig completing approximately 10 piles per day, achieving a total of around 200 pile points daily. With this level of productivity and continuous material supply, ICP Piles enabled efficient and uninterrupted construction operations.

Foundations That Support Major Infrastructure

This project highlights ICP Piles’ ability to combine technical performance, installation efficiency, and dependable supply for major expressway developments. For large-scale infrastructure projects built on challenging ground conditions, ICP Piles continues to deliver foundation solutions that provide reliability, performance, and long-term value.
