Picture a huge commercial project: The Waterfront Shoppes Retail Mall with its Convention Centre (PWCC) at The Light City Penang, developed by IJM Perennial Development Sdn. Bhd. It’s situated on reclaimed land along the Penang coastline, requiring approximately 3,983 piling points for Phase 1, covering over one million square feet. The foundation work was allocated an eight-month timeline (October 2020 – June 2021). The sandy ground necessitated deep foundations for heavy loads, along with a 10m excavation down to the pile-cap level. Importantly, noise and vibration were strictly prohibited, ruling out hydraulic hammers.
Selecting the Perfect Fit
Given the reclaimed coastal land and the imperative for quiet installation, ICP piles proved to be the perfect fit. ICP Piles provided Dia. 500mm, Grade 90 spun piles with a special thick-wall design for this project, around 48-60m penetration depth. These friction piles were installed smoothly via the jack-in method, effectively avoiding any noisy or vibration issues.
