17 Jul Malaysia’s Longest 90m Prejoined Spun Pile – A Record-Breaking Achievement at Batang Lupar Bridge in Sarawak
Down in Sebuyau, Kuching, the Batang Lupar Bridge project is a key infrastructure development spearheaded by JKR Malaysia. This landmark bridge aims to improve connectivity across Sarawak, positioned near the river mouth where it meets the sea. The project began construction in 2021 and is targeted for completion in 2026.
Challenging Marine Environment
This spot in Sarawak, right by the river mouth, has tidal currents issues, unpredictable weather, and rough sea conditions. All of that constantly affected the piling operations. We had to carefully monitor the sea and weather conditions in order to complete the piling works. To keep things from falling behind schedule, the project team even brought in an extra piling rig, just to crank up the pace of the project.
Innovative Foundation and Transport Solutions
To support the bridge’s strong foundation, Pre-joined is needed to avoid challenging welding work on-site, and the windows of right timing are very limited. That set a brand new record not only for ICP Piles but for Malaysia as well. These 1m diameter, 90m piles were produced and pre-joined right in ICP’s Lumut factory and made offshore installation much more efficient. We also upgraded our handling and jointing facilities to accommodate the production and jointing of these 90m piles.
Transporting such long piles was challenging. Standard barges weren’t big enough to carry these 90m long piles, enlarge barges from shipbuilding companies are required. These custom barges ensured the piles could be transported securely and efficiently right to the construction area.
Record-Breaking Achievement
Assembling the piles in a factory under controlled conditions helps avoid weather-related delays and limits the effect of outside factors, leading to smoother construction and more dependable results. The direct outcome was significant in saving both project timeline and budget. The ICP team successfully completed the supply of piles for the Batang Lupar Bridge project in Sarawak, meeting the required timeline. Just today, on July 11, 2025, ICP Piles secured a spot in the Malaysia Book of Records, The Malaysia Longest Prejoined Spun Concrete Piles, with an impressive 90 meters long. This achievement truly belongs to the dedication and hard work of the entire team. Together, we deliver Trusted Foundation.
